aireg gains Siemens Energy as a new member

23. August 2022

Siemens Energy has joined the aviation initiative aireg. As one of the world’s leading energy technology companies, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain with its portfolio. This includes the development of “Power-to-X” technologies based on industrial electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen, among others. Siemens Energy is developing projects for the rapid scaling of eFuels production capacities so that these fuels, such as Power-toLiquid (PtL) kerosene, will soon be available in relevant quantities and at market prices. In this respect, Siemens Energy’s entry is a very important expansion of aireg’s competence network and a significant step towards the goal of using at least 10% sustainable aviation fuels by 2030.

Volkmar Pflug, head of the Power-to-X programme at Siemens Energy, explained on joining aireg: “Electricity-based fuels based on green hydrogen will make an enormous contribution to decarbonising the transport sector, especially in areas such as aviation that are difficult or impossible to electrify. As a technology company, we are developing the industrial facilities together with partners to be able to produce CO2-neutral PtL kerosene for aviation based on green hydrogen efficiently and cost-effectively. In addition to technological solutions, we also need a reliable regulatory framework to successfully implement the energy transition in the transport sector as well. That is why we are looking forward to an intensive cooperation with aireg.”

Siegfried Knecht, chairman of the aireg board, says: “It is a pleasure for me to welcome Siemens Energy to the aireg membership! This gives the value chain for the production and market ramp-up of PtL SAF a globally active and leading partner. aireg is therefore even better equipped to organise the PtL ramp-up desired by German politics. Only the publication of the corresponding funding mechanisms to support the ramp-up is still missing, but I am confident that the calls for this will be coming soon. In any case, both industry and research are prepared.”

About Siemens Energy:
Siemens Energy is one of the world’s leading energy technology companies. The company works with its customers and partners on energy systems for the future, thus supporting the transition to a more sustainable world. With its portfolio of products, solutions and services, Siemens Energy covers almost the entire energy value chain – from power generation and transmission to storage. The portfolio includes conventional and renewable energy technology, such as gas and steam turbines, hybrid power plants operated with hydrogen, and power generators and transformers. More than 50 percent of the portfolio has already been decarbonized. A majority stake in the listed company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) makes Siemens Energy a global market leader for renewable energies. An estimated one-sixth of the electricity generated worldwide is based on technologies from Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy employs around 91,000 people worldwide in more than 90 countries and generated revenue of €28.5 billion in fiscal year 2021.

About aireg e.V:
aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was founded in 2011 as an association of companies and organisations from industry, research and science. As a non-profit initiative, aireg promotes the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation in order to achieve the ambitious CO₂ reduction targets of the aviation industry. Members come from all sectors of the aviation renewable energy value chain: this includes research at universities and major research institutions, equipment manufacturers and operators, biorefineries, the petroleum industry, propulsion and aircraft manufacturers, governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, airports and airlines. The industrial members internationally cover the range from start-ups to large corporations.
