PCK Raffinerie GmbH becomes a member of aireg

5. January 2023

Schwedt and Berlin, 05 January 2023 – PCK Raffinerie GmbH is one of the first refineries in Germany to join the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany (aireg).

PCK was a pioneer in the use of bio-based components in the refinery process and produces various high-quality biofuel components. The industrial park site of PCK is also home to one of the largest bioenergy producers in Europe and since recently also of the “Start-up Lab Schwedt”, sponsored by the German Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg.

In the course of the transformation, PCK is working on various sustainable projects and with different partners. The aim is to optimally integrate the regional surpluses of green energy (wind and solar) and the available industrial sites into this process.

The use and/or production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels to reduce emissions from air traffic is also an important part of PCK’s strategy. In particular as a supplier for BER airport, the refinery takes an essential role in this regard. The refinery, which is located in Schwedt, additionally supplies 90 % of the fuel to the Berlin and Brandenburg area, as well as parts of western Poland.

Ralf Schairer, spokesman for the management of PCK Raffinerie GmbH: “As a member of aireg, we have access to relevant information and networks. These are important to further accelerate our development towards a sustainable refinery location.”

Melanie Form, member of the aireg board and managing director, says about joining: “We are very pleased to welcome PCK Raffinerie GmbH as a member. For sustainable aviation fuels to achieve high market shares, the contribution of refineries like PCK, which prioritize emissions reduction and actively develop the production of renewable fuels, is irreplaceable.”

About PCK Raffinerie GmbH:
PCK Raffinerie GmbH represents the reduction of waste and emissions as well as efficient energy use and processes about 12 million tons of crude oil annually into petrol, diesel, paraffin, energy (electricity, steam) and other products. The company plans to be one of the most energy-efficient refineries in Western Europe by 2025. Furthermore, PCK has invested more than 600 million euros in environmental protection, which were spent e.g. on the construction of desulphurization plants and waste gas purification systems or on the construction of a new power plant with a three-stage waste gas purification system: Denitrification, dedusting, desulphurization.

About aireg e.V:
aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was founded in 2011 as an association of companies and organisations from industry, research and science. As a non-profit initiative, aireg is committed to the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation in order to achieve the ambitious CO₂ reduction targets of the aviation industry. The members come from all areas of the value chain of renewable energies for aviation: This ranges from research at universities and large research institutions, plant manufacturers and operators, biorefineries, the petroleum industry, engine and aircraft manufacturers, governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations and airports to airlines. The industrial members internationally cover a broad international spectrum, from start-ups to large corporations.
