aireg at ILA 2024
Wednesday, June 5th – Sunday, June 9th 2024
Meet the World´s Aerospace Pioneers
Meet the World’s Aerospace Pioneers – this is the motto of this year’s International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) Berlin at BER from June 5-9. Over 500 exhibitors from more than 80 countries will be represented in the fields of aviation, space, defense & support, advanced air mobility and suppliers, covering the entire value chain.
This is where the transformation of civil aviation towards climate neutrality will be demonstrated and brought to life. To achieve this, aircraft and engine manufacturers must undertake special efforts with regard to future conventional and disruptive technologies. Operational improvements and a single European airspace would also make a significant contribution to reducing emissions. However, the largest part of the reduction gap that needs to be closed will have to be covered by sustainable synthetic aviation fuel.
This is why aireg is also represented at the exhibition with a stand at which twelve members and one cooperation partner want to present themselves in particular. We look forward to a productive exchange and interesting events at our stand in connection with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). You are cordially invited to visit us in hall 2 at stand 111.
LET´S FLY SAF. NOW!
About aireg e.V.:
aireg – the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was established in 2011 as a consortium of companies and organisations from industry, research, and academia. As a charitable initiative, aireg is dedicated to promoting the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation to achieve the aviation industry’s ambitious CO₂ reduction targets. Its members span the entire value chain of renewable energies for aviation, ranging from university and major research institution research, equipment manufacturers and operators, bio-refineries, the petroleum industry, engine and aircraft manufacturers, government organisations, non-governmental organisations, and airports to airlines. The industrial members internationally range from startups to large conglomerates.
Smoothing SAF Take-off: Ensuring Financing and Scaling Production
Smoothing SAF Take-off: Ensuring Financing and Scaling Production
ILA Stage Aviation Future Lab Stage (Hall 2)
Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 16:00 – 16:55 CEST
Short Description
Since IATA’s adoption of a 2050 net zero carbon goal in October 2021, a key issue is the acceleration of effective emission reductions as well as energy transition and innovation in the industry. A critical element is the availability and use of fuels that have a lower carbon footprint: sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Two major challenges for accelerating the provision and adoption of SAF are
- the large and growing size of the jet fuel market and hence significant financial outlays that are required (including for storage and distribution), and
- the hurdles created by the cost of SAF which is higher than petroleum-based jet fuel.
Moreover, there is a critical need to ensure transparency and reduce uncertainties in the regulatory and legal environment. Governments have to set the right framework for action. To reduce the risk profile, countries need to make significant progress, upgrade their macro policy frameworks and have more macro stability as well as appropriate regulatory as well as legal frameworks.

The Route Towards Net Zero
The Route Towards Net Zero
aireg-stand (Hall 2, Stand 111)
Thursday, June 6, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CEST
Short Description
Though there has been meaningful momentum, the world is not on track to achieve the goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement of limiting warming to well below 2°C or ideally 1.5°C. To meet that goal, countries and companies have committed to reaching net-zero emissions of CO2 and reducing emissions of other greenhouse gases.
Aviation today accounts for a relatively small share of global emissions but is one of the most challenging sectors to reduce its climate impact. New aircraft can be up to 25% more efficient than the models they replace, growth in activity has historically outpaced efficiency improvement. However, there is no silver bullet, and technology innovation is needed across the sector, including in production of low-emission fuels, improvements in aircraft and engines, and operational optimization to curb growth in emissions and ultimately reduce them this decade. Production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will play a major role on the route towards global aviation’s 2050 Net Zero goal. Increasing the production and use of these fuels to get in line with the Net Zero Scenario will require supportive policies and a significant ramp-up of investments in production capacity. The panelists will address the challenges and opportunities to get on track to achieve the goal.

„Aviation is a growth industry and essential for global mobility. However, its climate impact is extremely difficult to mitigate. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) play the major role in leading global aviation to a CO2-neutral future towards the net zero goal. To get this on track it is evermore important all stakeholders work together: producers and suppliers, airlines as well as aircraft manufacturers, supported by a reliable industry-friendly regulatory framework. At ILA, aireg will showcase SAF is at the top of the agenda.“
Siegfried Knecht
Chairman of the Board
„There are still a number of obstacles in the regulation of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This delays or prevents major investments in SAF and must change quickly. With our presence at ILA, aireg will actively work to remove these obstacles and to gain support for the creation of the necessary investment incentives and long-term financing for SAF projects. Together, we can move the needle toward a CO2-neutral future for aviation.“
