About aireg e.V.
aireg is committed to promoting the increased production and use of renewable energy sources in aviation and, to this end, advocates technological openness and appropriate regulatory frameworks at national and international level.
aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V.
The Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was founded in 2011 as an association of companies and organisations from the sectors of industry, research, and science. As a non-profit initiative, aireg advocates for the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation in order to achieve the aviation industry’s ambitious CO₂ reduction targets. The 60+ members come from all sectors of the aviation renewable energy value chain: This includes research at universities and major research institutions, equipment manufacturers and operators, biorefineries, the petroleum industry, propulsion and aircraft manufacturers, governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations and airports, as well as airlines. Industrial members internationally cover the range from start-ups to large corporations.
Facing the environmental challenges of aviation
Background:
The use of fossil fuels contributes significantly to global warming and climate change. Alternative propulsion systems based on energy in the form of electricity or green hydrogen and its derivatives can be developed in the near future for ground transport and shipping. These alternatives will only play a marginal role in aviation until the end of the next decade at the earliest. At the same time, however, the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO expects massive growth in global aviation in the coming years.
Previous measures: For this reason, the aviation industry is focussing on efficiency and savings. For years, air traffic has been steadily reducing its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per passenger, however absolute fuel consumption continues to rise. In the long term, the self-imposed goal of international aviation is to reverse the trend: By 2050 greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced to net-zero.
Working together on regenerative fuels
aireg’s mission:
The measures taken so far are not sufficient to achieve this ambitious goal. Only through the widespread use of renewable aviation fuels can the rapidly growing aviation industry effectively contribute to the energy transition and climate protection.
Destination 2050, an alliance of several aviation associations in Europe, also predicts that renewable fuels will play a key role in achieving climate neutrality in aviation. Renewable aviation fuels are expected to contribute 56% to net zero by 2050.
Goals of aireg until 2030
