Freedom and mobility are of paramount importance to our open societies – preserving these achievements well into the future requires a fast transition to Net Zero Aviation. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are a key instrument to solve this challenge. However, there is a significant gap between demand and production capacity. Market analysis reveals substantial financial barriers that hinder project financing, thereby limiting the availability of SAF. Additionally, compared to kerosene, SAF prices are two to five times higher, which discourages airlines from paying a premium, while striving to maintain affordable prices for travellers.
To address these and other challenges, EY, in collaboration with Fraunhofer, has conducted a comprehensive global study covering the entire SAF value chain. This study proposes solutions, particularly for Europe, to bridge the gap and support the initiation of SAF projects, enabling them to offer economically attractive prices to offtakers.
In this webinar, Daniel Eisenhuth and Dr. Viktoriia Betina from EY, together with Dr. Axel Kraft from Fraunhofer, will discuss the EU requirements for SAF from technological, policy, and offtaking perspectives. They will share the projected production gap, and the hurdles identified through interviews with global airlines, investors, banks, and production companies. Finally, they will introduce their strategic instrument designed to assist Europe in adopting SAF and fostering the market for it.
Daniel Eisenhuth (Partner at EY), has over 18 years of experience in sustainability consulting, focusing on decarbonization strategies for heavy industries and transportation sectors. He is highly skilled in navigating the intricacies of the air sector’s transition to SAF. His expertise encompasses analyzing costs and investments, developing sophisticated financial models, and understanding challenges of policy and regulatory frameworks across Europe, APAC, and Africa.
Dr. Viktoriia Betina (Senior Manager at EY), is a global expert covering SAF, with over 11 years of experience in the sustainability sector, particularly focusing on transport and infrastructure. Her specialization includes developing transition strategies for both governmental and private entities, with a strong emphasis on projects involving biofuels and H2. Viktoriia’s expertise is centered on devising financial and policy instruments that improve the bankability of large-scale projects.
Dr. Axel Kraft (SAF expert at Fraunhofer UMSICHT), holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He worked with Akzo Nobel Chemicals for 12 years, focusing on R&D and fuel production support for local business units in the US and the Netherlands. Since 2007, he has been employed at Fraunhofer UMSICHT in various roles related to biofuels (including SAF), biobased chemicals, and H2.
