The aim of aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e. V. – is to strive for the most climate-neutral and competitive aviation possible in Germany by using SAF and at the same time to establish Germany as an international technology leader in the international future market for sustainable aviation fuels. As a […]

From 2025, the EU will have a two per cent blending mandate for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). A ten-point measures paper, drawn up by the SAF ramp-up working group (AG) of the Working Group on Climate-Neutral Aviation (AKkL), shows how investment in production capacities can now be driven forward. It was presented to the Federal […]

Limiting the global average temperature increase to 1.5 °C requires significant efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union has set an overall target of a 55% greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction by 2030 compared to 1990 levels (‘European Green Deal’). Present proposals for a European blending mandate for SAF as outlined in the […]

The widespread use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) is seen as a key lever for aviation to become CO2-neutral by mid-century. With the aviation sector under growing pressure to reduce emissions effectively, a rapid scale-up of SAF production and use is urgently needed. In this context, it is crucial to design SAF accounting models in […]

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) have great potential to become the main driver for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector – both for current and future fleets. This requires great efforts to develop appropriate regulations and promotional measures to support the development of commercial production facilities as well as suitable conditions of […]

aireg Roadmap Sustainable Aviation Fuels Status, Options, Necessary Actions

The detailed aireg Roadmap “Sustainable Aviation Fuels – Status, Options, Necessary Actions” to the short version on “Roadmap on the Develpment and Introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuels” already published a few months ago is “ready to fly” and available as pdf.

The aireg roadmap describes the status quo, identifies options for SAF across the full range of feedstocks, and points to needs for action that are necessary for the production and market introduction of sustainable synthetic kerosene, and thus crucial for sustainable aviation. The joint efforts of industry, politics, research and society are now required to initiate the necessary steps and offer measures to achieve this.

Berlin, 23rd June 2022 – During the 22nd International Air Show (ILA) taking place in Berlin from 22.6. to 26.06., aireg presents a basis for discussion on the accounting of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Against the background of developing blending quotas for SAF in Germany, Europe and many other countries, it must be possible to […]

The International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition, founded yesterday at the COP 26 summit in Glasgow, which Germany also signed after some hesitancy, sends an important signal for international sustainable air transport. The change to climate-neutral aviation can only succeed with globally uniform rules and incentive systems. The International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition has set itself […]

The members of the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. welcome the National Hydrogen Strategy (NWS) adopted by the Federal Cabinet on June 10th 2020. It is quite rightly stated that aviation will be dependent on liquid fuels for the foreseeable future. Sustainable aviation fuels, for whose green hydrogen production is important in […]

Europe has reached a critical turning point in terms of its attractiveness as a business location: In view of the energy crisis and the tough global race for best climate technologies (Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Belt and Road Initiative), the risk of replacing dependence on fossil fuels with industrial and technological dependence is real: aireg […]

SummarySustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are the most important means to reduce aviation‘s climate impact. The climate targets of air transport are only achievable once all options are enabled. To provide sustainable aviation for everyone, it is necessary to design measures to reduce the climate effects of aviation in a cost-effective and technology neutral manner. Earnings […]

The blending mandate proposed by the EU Commission as part of the Fit for 55 package is a key measure to achieving the Paris climate targets. To reduce the climate impact of aviation, a rapid market rampup of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is necessary within this decade. Therefore, aireg advocates an increase of the blending […]

Berlin, 14.07.2021 The EU Commission submitted the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation draft intending to boost the ramp-up of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for European aviation. The key instrument is a gradually increasing quota on SAF. With that, the EU Commission follows the examples of several member states who see a SAF-quota as a crucial step towards […]
