aireg e.V. welcomes the city of Hamburg as the newest member The association Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. (aireg) and its members welcome the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, represented by the Senator for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation, as their newest member. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, as the economic metropolis of the North and the third largest civil aviation location in the world, hereby underlines the importance of aviation fuels from renewable energies as an important contribution to a sustainable aviation industry and region. Through the Leading-Edge Cluster Hamburg Aviation and the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research, the “Partnership for Clean Aviation” (“Clean Aviation”) is currently already developing a technological roadmap that focuses more strongly on sustainability goals and environmentally friendly technologies for aviation and integrates new players in the field of electrification and digitalisation.

Commenting on the accession of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Senator for Economics, Transport and Innovation, Michael Westhagemann, said: “For us, sustainable economic policy means reconciling economic and ecological goals. Especially by concentrating on key industries such as aviation and by using new technologies and our know-how, Hamburg can point the way forward – and with partnerships such as “Clean Aviation” is already providing an approach for a more sustainable design of aviation, through topics such as “fuel cells” or “more environmentally and passenger-friendly cabins”. Technology-based innovation for more climate protection – with this credo, Hamburg wants to make the best possible contribution to the aireg initiative.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt, member of the board of directors of aireg e.V., commented on the membership: “We are very pleased to have won the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as another northern German state and a very important player in northern Germany for future projects in the field of alternative fuels. Through its involvement in the hydrogen strategy of the northern German states and the plans for a 100 MW electrolysis plant in the Port of Hamburg, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a very important partner to contribute, together with aireg, to the achievement of the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and to promote the market introduction of synthetic kerosene so that the climate gas emissions of air traffic can be significantly reduced in the long term.
