Use aviation tax for SAF tax credit

24. October 2024

Berlin, October 24, 2024 At the Employers’ Day on October 22, 2024 in Berlin, both former Minister President Roland Koch and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck highlighted the benefits of tax credits, which are known to have gained lasting appeal in the USA as a result of the IRA. The form and extent to which such a measure would be suitable as an incentive for investment in Germany should be quickly put to the test, as there is a lack of incentives to support producers and airlines and to attract investors for the SAF production ramp-up in Germany, not least in view of the urgently needed defossilization of aviation.

Siegfried Knecht, Chairman of the Executive Board of aireg, emphasized: “The quota requirements for SAF in the EU may be an ‘incentive’ – because they are mandatory – for the production and use of SAF, but they are not sufficient as a basis for investment decisions and, as we know from the financial sector, they are not bankable! What is needed are incentives that make it easier for SAF producers and SAF users  to enter the high-priced SAF market and signal to investors that it is worth entering this market by providing a reliable framework. Instead of allocating the revenue from the aviation tax to the federal budget, it should be used for an incentive scheme through tax credits to offer producers a production incentive and to provide airlines  with relief from additional costs.”
