Spark e-Fuels joins aireg aviation initiative for production and use of sustainable aviation fuels

4. August 2022

Berlin, 04th August 2022– Spark e-Fuels GmbH has joined the aviation initiative aireg. The start-up pursues the goal of providing competitive and sustainable eFuels for aviation. By developing efficient and scalable PtL plants, Spark plans to overcome the main barriers for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF): High costs and low production volumes. aireg e.V. has been advocating for the increased use of aviation fuels from renewable resources and thus also for eFuels in aviation for more than ten years.

Dr. Mathias Bösl, CEO of Spark e-Fuels, commented on joining aireg: “We at Spark are very much looking forward to working with aireg to jointly reduce emissions in aviation through sustainable and cost-competitive aviation fuels on an industrial scale. We strongly believe that our development of integrated and modularized eFuels facilities will make an important contribution to SAF production. In aireg, we have found a strong partner with deep expertise and a strong network for our ambitious goals.”

Melanie Form, member of the aireg board and managing director, says about joining: “With Spark e-Fuels, an innovative and lively young company becomes a member of aireg. Spark’s approach of networking different components of e-Fuels plants is promising and can help to question and optimize previous concepts.”

About Spark e-Fuels:
Spark e-Fuels GmbH was founded in 2021 with the goal of producing sustainable and cost-competitive eFuels on an industrial scale to enable sustainable aviation free of negative environmental impacts (CO2 and non-CO2). To achieve this, Spark is working on the development and operation of a decentralized network of eFuel production sites. On the technology side, Spark is focusing on the development of fully integrated and modular PtL plants specifically for the production of SAF. With this concept, Spark plans to reduce both Capex and Opex costs of eFuel production.

About aireg e.V:
aireg – Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. was founded in 2011 as an association of companies and organizations from industry, research and science. As a non-profit initiative, aireg is committed to the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation in order to achieve the ambitious CO₂ reduction targets of the aviation industry. The members come from all areas of the value chain of renewable energies for aviation: This ranges from research at universities and large research institutions, plant manufacturers and operators, biorefineries, the petroleum industry, engine and aircraft manufacturers, government organizations, non-governmental organizations and airports to airlines. The industrial members cover a broad international spectrum from start-ups to large corporations.
